Have you been told that you have or may have Osteoarthritis? In spite of what many patients are told, and indeed the perception of the general public, Osteoarthritis - particularly if caught early - is very treatable. It is not 'wear and tear' and nor is it 'doom and gloom'!
Professor Cathy Speed is a Consultant in Rheumatology, Sport & Exercise Medicine, and runs a service dedicated to the early diagnosis and treatment of people with osteoarthritis of any limb joint. Customised approaches to preventing progression of the condition, and keeping every patient happy, fit and healthy are implemented under her careful supervision.
It is estimated that 25% of females and 16% of males over the age of 60 are symptomatic from osteoarthritis.
Our understanding of Osteoarthritis has significantly moved forward in recent years. Treatments include injection therapies to promote pain relief and reconstitute normal joint fluid, nutritional programmes and specific forms of exercise. There are also medications and other approaches that can be very useful. Usually treatments are combined in a package for the patient according to their individual needs.
